On the northwest shores of Hudson Bay a vast inlet reaches into the rolling expanses of the Keewatin Barrenlands. This is Wager Bay, centerpiece of Canada’s newest National Park – Ukkusiksalik, where bountiful waters are surrounded by a rich oasis of Arctic ecology.
Step off the plane atop the esker that is the runway for Sila Lodge, and enter a land of austere and haunting beauty, 65 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. In the northern summer, the tundra’s Arctic garden provides a stunning floral display. Polar Bear, Barrenground Caribou, and Arctic Wolf roam, without limits. Peregrines soar freely.
Wager Bay supports a large number of summering Polar Bear. They hunt the icy waters of the bay, luxuriate on islands, and provide a unique opportunity for photographers to capture images of this superb mammal at “home.”
For thousands of years, Inuit and their ancestors have occupied this place; their sprits are still manifest in rich archaeological sites dotting the shores.
Hiking the tundra with its open vistas and tumbling waters, plying the ice-filled waters of the bay, or simply relaxing at the lodge, you will enjoy intimate encounters with this land and many of its remarkable species. It is a place apart – Wager Bay awaits you.
