Great Slave Lake & The Northwest Passage
It is rare, indeed, to experience darkness during the summer in the land of midnight sun. Led by a renowned astronomer and solar system specialist, this is a life-time experience of Canada’s High Arctic, which, with the benefit of chartered aircraft, will also encounter the Arctic’s Total Solar Eclipse of August 1, 2008. Our journey begins in Yellowknife on the shores of Great Slave Lake, the historic capital of the Northwest Territories, rich in history of the indigenous Dene, as well as precious furs, gold, and most recently, fine gem diamonds. With nearly endless daylight in July, we will indulge in the natural beauty, quiet and peacefulness of the northern boreal forest wilderness, and ply the pristine waters of Great Slave Lake to the West Mirage Islands, a summer haven for inland migratory birdlife.

From Yellowknife, we fly to Cambridge Bay, south Victoria Island, on Dease Strait of the historic Northwest Passage. We explore south Victoria Island to Mount Pelly, which is known for large herds of musk oxen, as well as caribou, foxes, and possibly wolves. Though the land is rocky and barren, dispersed lush tundra harbors a myriad of brilliant Arctic flowers and many migratory birds, from snow buntings and swans toe eiders peregrine falcons.

From Cambridge Bay, we fly across the Northwest Passage by float plane to the Kent Peninsula. Here, in the “land of the midnight sun,” and from the comfort of a first class naturalist lodge, we savor pure Arctic Wilderness, where musk oxen and caribou run freely, and large and elusive predators, such as wolves, wolverines, and barren ground grizzly bears may be encountered at any time. Bird watchers will be astonished and delighted by the frequency and abundance of migratory birds and raptors. History enthusiasts will be enthralled by rich Thule culture and Inuit archaeological finds of stone fox traps, food caches, and kayak stands.
